SciFi and Fantasy Art: Where I hang my phoenix coat when I'm not wearing it, what I feed my spotted rat, and other mysteries

This is not actually new work--I did this ages ago, but it looked so shabby next to the Martin Johnson Heade painting I was using for stylistic inspiration I decided it was a failure and put it away. I got it out again today and decided it wasn't so bad.

Anyway, this is a picture of this ugly tailless rat I used to have, eating a magical glowing fruit. I like to think it's the most delicious fruit in the world. The rat's name was Shakespeare. It's supposed to be in the style of the Hudson River School, but I didn't nail it. That mysterious lighting effect still eludes me.

7 Apr 2006	Kort Kramer	Loading... I would say you got pretty close to nailing that HRS lighting and color. I'm not sure how to reproduce it exactly either, but this is a valliant attempt. Great painting.

21 Dec 2007	Marie M.	Loading... I think the only ugly thing concerning rats is their tales, so this rat is cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute!! Your phoenix coat looks somehow out of place and the bottom blanket is drawn too flat compared to the rest but all in all you're just amazing, so who cares? Great title, btw. What drugs do you do?
